A Holter study, a special test we use to monitor the patient heart over a period of time, usually 24 to 48 hours. It’s like a longer version of an ECG (electrocardiogram), which is the test where we put small sticky patches with wires, called electrodes, on the chest to record the heart’s electrical activity. These are connected to a small, portable device called a Holter monitor. The device is about the size of a smartphone and can easily be worn on a belt or in a small pouch. The Holter monitor will record the patient’s heartbeats continuously while they go about their normal daily activities, including sleeping. This gives us a clear picture of how the heart works over a longer period than a regular ECG.

The patient can go about the daily routine as usual, but they should avoid getting the device wet, so no swimming or bathing while wearing it. You’ll also be asked to keep a diary of the patient’s activities and any symptoms they might feel, like if they mention feeling dizzy or if they say their heart is racing. After the 24 or 48 hours, you’ll come back to the clinic, and we’ll take off the monitor. We’ll then analyze the recorded data to see if there were any unusual heart rhythms or other issues during that time.
